About this Role:
Summer is looking for an experienced controller to play an integral role in helping grow the company from a scrappy seed stage business to a fiscally responsible nationwide single family rental owner and operator. This role will require an entrepreneurial spirit and the commitment to build a team capable of solving tomorrow’s problems.
The ideal candidate has experience working in specialty finance and/or real estate and is looking for the opportunity to build a team from scratch. This individual will be tasked with improving existing processes as well as rapidly leveling up our business throughout 2023 to support the expansion of our rental portfolio from 14 homes to 100+.
What you’ll do:
Oversight of the Accounts Payable processes, including:
Audit of invoice entry process and A/P systems
Oversight of ongoing AP process in conjunction with outsourced accounting team
Partner with operations and finance to ensure proper accruals / allocations are made for operating expenses across properties and periods
Partner with acquisitions / design to develop a budget / reconciliation process for CapEx investments made during the onboarding of new homes

Build processes to solve problems today with an eye for tomorrow
Oversight of the Billing/Accounts Receivable processes, including:
Audit of billing processes and A/R systems
Production of monthly recurring billing to Members
Bank reconciliation of short term rental receivables
Prepare/Insource general ledger journal entries

Partner with internal stakeholders to optimize for technology / automation (e.g. Stripe, Salesforce)
General
Preparation and analysis of monthly Financial Statements, including reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts
Oversee audit to take place in Q1 / Q2 2023
Oversee Netsuite (or other advanced account platform) integration
Act as a key contributor in strategic discussions regarding product composition and the recognition of revenue / cash proceeds at varying points in the customer lifecycle
Build a team to support debt covenants on a $100mm debt facility
Develop a comprehensive plan to insource each function currently sitting with outsourced accounting team
Assist in the creation and management of a department / home specific budgeting process
Provide key inputs to Finance team to help forecast weekly/monthly/quarterly cash requirements
Work with outsourced accounting team to oversee payroll processing for US and CAD based employees
Oversee tax filings, including corporate taxes and state specific sales and use taxes. Ensure product team is withholding and charging the appropriate taxes as we expand
Work with outsourced accounting team to manage asset depreciation schedules
You’ll be a Great Fit if you Have….8+ years accounting experience (GAAP required, CPA desired)
5+ years people management experience and ability to build an internal team
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or a related field
Start-up experience preferred (working with project managers, team leads, operations a plus)
Real Estate / Speciality Finance experience preferred
Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to interact with executive level clients (both internal and external)
Experience managing an outsourced accounting team
Experience with Quickbooks Online
Experience implementing Netsuite or a similar advanced account tool
Highly organized with strong emphasis on self-motivation and analytical skills
Ability to work on multiple projects in an evergreen environment with shifting priorities
Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including MS Excel (including VLookups, Pivot Tables, etc.)
